    Abstract

This study aims to analyze the errors made by Phase C students in solving mathematical word problems on the topic of Least Common Multiple (LCM) based on Newman's Error Analysis Procedure. The background of this research is based on the frequent errors made by students when solving LCM word problems, particularly in understanding the context and determining the correct steps. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method with a case study design. The research subjects consisted of six fifth-grade students from a public elementary school in Bandung. Data were collected through diagnostic tests, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. The results showed that all students made errors in one or more stages of Newman's procedure, including reading, comprehension, transformation, process skills, and encoding. The most dominant errors occurred in the process skills and final answer stages. Factors contributing to these errors include a lack of accuracy, limited conceptual understanding, difficulty in translating verbal information into mathematical models, a tendency to rush, and ignoring time-related elements in the problems. These findings highlight the importance of the teacher's role in guiding students to thoroughly understand the structure of word problems and to develop appropriate problem-solving strategies. This research is expected to contribute to the development of more effective and contextual mathematics learning strategies in elementary education.
