    Abstract

This study was motivated by the low level of understanding of fifth-grade elementary school students in science, particularly in the subject of light properties. Preliminary studies indicate that some students have difficulty understanding certain concepts related to light properties. This study aims to measure the effectiveness of using a differentiated learning approach to improve fifth-grade elementary school students' understanding of the properties of light. The research approach used is a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design, specifically a one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample in this study consisted of 24 fifth-grade students at an elementary school in Pangalengan District, Bandung Regency. The instrument used was a written test with essay questions. Data analysis was conducted using normality tests, hypothesis tests, and N-Gain tests. The analysis results showed that the average post-test score increased from the average pre-test score, from 48.25 to 76.75. Based on the hypothesis test, the significance value was 0.000 <0.05, so H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted, meaning that there was a significant improvement in conceptual understanding ability. Based on the N-Gain mean difference test, the N-Gain score was 0.5425, indicating that the N-Gain score falls under the “moderate” criterion. Meanwhile, the N-Gain percentage shows a value of 54.2071, which means 55, so the effectiveness category of the learning approach is at a sufficiently effective level to improve the conceptual understanding of the properties of light among fifth-grade elementary school students.
