    Abstract

The mismatch between mathematics learning demands—which emphasize problem-solving—and students' low Self-efficacy and abilities, especially in the topic of probability, highlights the need for a more contextual learning approach. This study aims to: (1) determine whether the improvement in students' mathematical problem-solving abilities using Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is significantly higher than those with direct instruction, (2) examine whether students' Self-efficacy improves more significantly with PBL, and (3) analyze the relationship between Self-efficacy and problem-solving improvement among students taught with PBL. The study used a quasi-experimental method with a pretest-posttest nonequivalent control group design. The population consisted of all ninth-grade students at a public junior high school in Bandung, with two classes as samples: the experimental class (PBL) and the control class (direct instruction). Instruments used included tests and non-tests. Results show that PBL significantly improves both problem-solving ability and Self-efficacy compared to direct instruction. However, no significant relationship was found between Self-efficacy and problem-solving improvement in the PBL group. The study recommends a gradual implementation of PBL to enhance the quality of mathematics learning.
