Abstract
This study aims to design a motorcycle helmet by applying coconut fiber composite material to the shell using hand lay-up technique and determine the strength of the helmet when drop testing from a specified height with a maximum limit of safety standards. Coconut fiber was chosen because it has good mechanical properties, abundant availability, and is environmentally friendly. The problem formulation includes how to design the helmet to be strong and safe according to safety standards. This research used a design-by-doing approach and hands-on experiments, focusing on the configuration of coconut fiber and the hand lay-up process using polyester resin. A series of experiments were conducted to determine the best fiber configuration, and the results showed that the chopped fiber configuration provided the most optimal results in terms of application and structural strength. The results of the drop test from a height of 1,5 meters showed that the helmet can absorb an impact force of 27,65G, far below the maximum limit of 200G set by safety standards. The conclusion of this research is that coconut fiber composite material is feasible to be used as an alternative using natural materials in the design of motorcycle helmets, with simple production techniques and relatively low costs.
