Abstract

Prosocial behavior is an important aspect in the social development of children, including early-age street children. Although early-age street children often get negative stigma from society, early-age street children still have the potential to show prosocial behavior. This study aims to explore the forms of prosocial behavior, factors that influence, and factors that inhibit the prosocial behavior of early-age street children in Bandung City. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. Participants in the study were three early-age street children and three parents of early-age street children as supporting sources. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and non-participant observation techniques. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. The findings of the study indicate that early-age street children have various forms of prosocial behavior such as sharing, helping, cooperating, being honest, and being generous. This behavior is influenced by internal factors such as self-motivation, empathy, and emotional satisfaction, as well as external factors, such as parental direction, positive reinforcement, and imitating the behavior of others. There are also factors that can inhibit the prosocial behavior of early-age street children such as internal factors including self-priority and fear of getting into trouble, while external factors such as the negative influence of fellow street children, not being consistent and needing direction, considering reciprocity, lack of fulfillment of basic needs, and parental conflicts that occur in front of children. This study concludes that even though early-age street children live in an environment full of challenges and limitations, they still have the capacity to demonstrate prosocial behavior. Therefore, appropriate support from the surrounding environment can help optimize the development of prosocial behavior of early-age street children.
