Abstract

The relationship between identity formation and moral development is a significant theme in Neil Gaiman's Coraline. This study aims to uncover identity formation and moral decision of Coraline. Thematic analysis was employed to systematically identify, analyze, and report patterns within the novel. Before going into the individuation process, the main components of the psyche, including the conscious, the unconscious, and the archetypes found within the novel were discussed to build a contextual background. Making a literary analysis of Coraline’s identity formation through Jungian archetypes and describing her moral decision through Kantian ethics theory, it evidently shows that her psychological development is closely linked to her moral decisions. The application of Jungian archetypes and Kantian ethics effectively explains Coraline's identity formation and moral development, it allows the study to delve into the deeper psychological dimensions of Coraline’s character, revealing how her experiences shape her sense of self. While the study focuses on internal processes, it could further explore how external factors, such as familial relationships, influence Coraline's psychological growth. The study concludes that Coraline's journey is both a psychological and ethical triumph, where her individuation is achieved through the reconciliation of her moral values with her evolving sense of self.
