Abstract

Self-regulated learning (SRL) has been recognized by previous studies as one of the keys in achieving academic success and developing students' personal skills. SRL refers to the ability of students to independently organize, monitor and direct their own learning process. Qur'an memorization program are generally implemented in boarding school, however, some non-boarding Islamic schools have also implemented Qur'an memorization as a flagship program that requires students to balance academic demands at school and Qur'an memorization, in which case SRL is very relevant and important for non-boarding students. This study aims to explore the challenges faced by non-boarding students in memorizing the Qur'an and how SRL strategies they apply in memorizing. This study used a phenomenological qualitative method with participants from non-boarding school students who memorized the Qur'an selected by purposive sampling. Data were collected through interviews and documentation. The result showed that the dynamics of the students Qur’an memorization process were colored by the challenges they experienced over time. The findings reveal that non-boarding students in memorizing the Qur’an apply 6 SRL strategies, namely setting goals and planning, time management and learning environment, as well as seeking information and evaluating their strengths and weaknesses in memorizing. In addition, parental involvement proved to be a key factor in the success of students’ SRL in non-dormitory schools. The recommendations of this study are shown to students, school and further researchers. Keywords: non-boarding school, Qur'an memorization, self-regulated learning
