Abstract

--------- Integration of emotional aspects in online learning is very important because it affects learning outcomes, so teaching strategies should consider students' motivation, beliefs, values, empathy, and emotional involvement. One approach to enhance motivation learning quality is by utilizing pedagogical agents as motivators and learning companions. Pedagogical agents can help students manage negative emotions during synchronous learning through natural and contextual facial expressions. This study implemented an intervention design on the facial expressions of 3D pedagogical agents using the Positive Reappraisal Emotion Regulation (PRER) strategy to provide positive feedback on the six basic emotions of students detected, especially negative emotions such as anger, fear, disgust, and sadness, based on the Valence Arousal Model matrix and ARCS Model (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction). In previous research, it was found that they were not able to provide personal responses from the results of student emotion detection through browser extensions for video conference applications using Facial Emotion Recognition (FER). Based on testing (N = 57), Instructional Materials Motivation Survey (IMMS) and Naïve rating in Cognitive Load Measures, all data have been valid with normal data distribution (significance value p >0.05) and reliable (value >0.8). The IMMS results show an average of 3.72 ("High"), and Cognitive Load with an average of 3.59 ("Sufficient"). This implementation has a significant impact in overcoming barriers to student motivation and providing a more positive, productive, effective, and efficient synchronous learning experience without too much affecting the cognitive load of students in its use.
