Abstract
Seiring dengan popularitas media sosial instagram yang terus tumbuh,
belakangan ini pun muncul sebuah fenomena yang terbilang baru yaitu second
account. Di kalangan mahasiswa Pendidikan IPS Universitas Pendidikan
Indonesia second account instagram ini cukup populer digunakan. Tujuan dari
penelitian ini adalah membongkar motif “sebab” (because of motive) dan
motif “tujuan” (in order to motive) penggunaan second account instagram
pada mahasiswa Pendidikan IPS Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. Penelitian
ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan fenomenologi. Teori
pada penelitian ini berpatok terhadap teori fenomenologi Alfred Schutz. Data
yang diperoleh dari penelitian ini bersumber dari hasil observasi, wawancara,
serta dokumentasi. Hasil dari penelitian ini menyebutkan bahwa motif
“sebab” (because of motive) penggunaan second account instagram pada
mahasiswa Pendidikan IPS Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia didominasi
karena tidak percaya diri, pengaruh teman atau fear of missing out, citra diri
atau personal branding dan memiliki pengalaman buruk di akun pertama (first
account). Sedangkan, motif “tujuan” (in order to motive) mahasiswa
Pendidikan IPS Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia pengguna second account
instgram didominasi dengan tujuan untuk digunakan sebagai arsip foto/vidio
dan menjadikan second account untuk tujuan kebebasan berekspresi.
Along with the growing popularity of social media Instagram, lately a fairly
new phenomenon-second account-has emerged. Among social science
education students at the Indonesia Univeristy of Education (UPI), this second
account Instagram is quite popular. The purpose of this research is to uncover
the motive or reasons behind the creation and use of second account
Instagram by social science education students at UPI. This research employs
qualitative methods with a phenomenological approach. Alfred Schutz's
phenomenological theory were used as the theretical framework of this
researc. Observations, interviews, and documentation were used as the main
data sources. The findings revealed that lack of confidence, the influence of
friends or fear of missing out, self-image or personal branding and having a
bad experience on the first account were found to be the main motives of why
the participants created and used second account Instgram. In addition to
these, the participants also indicanted that they used second account
Instagramn as a photo / video archive and for the freedom of expression
purposes.
