Abstract

Pembelajaran matematika berjenjang dan kompleks, dimana kesulitan pada satu materi bisa berdampak pada pemahaman materi lainnya. Salah satu materi matematika yang paling mendasar adalah materi nilai tempat. Penelitian ini berfokus pada kesulitan siswa kelas 2 SD dalam memahami nilai tempat, faktor yang menyebabkan kesulitan serta upaya yang dilakukan guru dalam menghadapi siswa yang mengalami kesulitan. Alasan utama diadakannya penelitian karena masih ada siswa yang mengalami kesulitan dalam memahami nilai tempat. Pendekatan penelitian yang digunakan adalah kualitatif dengan metode studi kasus. Bertempat di salah satu sekolah di Kota Bandung dengan partisipan siswa kelas 2 dan guru. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, kesulitan siswa kelas 2 SD dalam memahami nilai tempat yatiu kesulitan dalam memahami keruangan (60%), persepsi visual (74%), asosiasi visual-motor (78%), pemahaman simbol (56%), serta kendala dalam bahasa dan membaca (74%). Siswa dengan kemampuan tinggi cenderung mampu membedakan bilangan, memahami jarak bilangan, dan mengaplikasikan nilai tempat pada penjumlahan dan pengurangan. Siswa dengan kemampuan sedang umumnya menguasai nilai tempat, tetapi masih mengalami kesulitan pada soal yang lebih kompleks. Sementara itu, siswa dengan kemampuan rendah sering kesulitan memahami nilai tempat, jarak pada garis bilangan, dan melakukan operasi penjumlahan dan pengurangan. Kurangnya kemampuan membaca dan memahami nilai tempat menjadi faktor utama kesulitan pada siswa dengan kemampuan rendah. Kesulitan siswa dalam materi nilai tempat disebabkan oleh faktor internal serta faktor eksternal. Upaya guru untuk meningkatkan pemahaman siswa pada nilai tempat antara lain dilakukan melalui metode demonstrasi serta penggunaan bahan ajar yang beragam seperti kotak bilangan, papan bilangan, kantong bilangan, papan flannel, flashcard, dan media lainnya. Mathematics learning is gradual and complex, where difficulties in one topic can impact the understanding of other topics. One of the most fundamental mathematical topics is the concept of place value. This study focuses on the difficulties faced by second-grade students in understanding place value, the factors causing these difficulties, and the efforts made by teachers in addressing students experiencing difficulties. The main reason for conducting this research is the continued existence of students experiencing difficulties in understanding place value. The research approach used is qualitative with a case study method, conducted in one school in Bandung City involving second-grade students and teachers as participants. Based on the research results, the difficulties faced by second-grade students in understanding place value include spatial comprehension (60%), visual perception (74%), visual-motor association (78%), symbol understanding (56%), as well as language and reading constraints (74%). Students with high abilities tend to differentiate numbers, understand number distances, and apply place value in addition and subtraction. Students with moderate abilities generally grasp place value but still encounter difficulties with more complex problems. Meanwhile, students with low abilities often struggle to understand place value, number line spacing, and perform addition and subtraction operations. Lack of reading and understanding place value skills is the main factor contributing to difficulties among students with low abilities. Efforts by teachers to enhance student understanding of place value include demonstration methods and the use of various teaching materials such as number boxes, number boards, number pouches, flannel boards, flashcards, and other media.
