Abstract

Keragaman perilakun yang ditunjukkan siswa dalam proses pemerolehan bahasa Inggris merupakan hasil dari sistem kepribadian pada siswa. Studi ini mengkaji sistem kepribadian siswa yang meliputi komponen penyusun kepribadian dan dinamikanya selama proses pemerolehan bahasa Inggris. Fokus penelitian menggunakan komponen-komponen pada model sistem kepribadian McCrae dan Costa (1996). Dengan menggunakan desain penelitian fenomenologi, data penelitian dieksplorasi melalui wawancara mendalam semi terstruktur terhadap satu orang siswa laki-laki dan dan dua orang siswa perempuan di salah-satu sekolah menengah atas di Bandung. Hasil dari analisis data mendapati bahwa terdapat faktor internal pada sistem kepribadian yang berperan dalam pemerolehan bahasa Inggris siswa yang meliputi self-efficacy, self-reliance, dan trait kepribadian. Di sisi lain, faktor eksternal yang juga berperan diantaranya adalah language immersion, parental encouragement, dan extramural English. Berdasarkan pembahasan pada penelitian ini terdapat rekomendasi yang ditujukan kepada siswa, orang tua, dan guru mata pelajaran bahasa Inggris untuk memaksimalkan pemanfaatan faktor-faktor yang berperan dalam proses pemerolehan bahasa Inggris serta mencegah dampak negatif dari faktor yang menghambat. Rekomendasi untuk penelitian selanjutnya adalah untuk melakukan kajian lebih lanjut pada faktor self-reliance dan keterkaitannya pada proses pemerolehan bahasa Inggris serta kajian serupa pada konteks pemerolehan bahasa asing lainnya. Students are varied in terms of adaptation tendencies during the English learning process which are reflected in the diversity of their behavior. Personality as one of individual differences factors can be used to explore the dynamics of student adaptation in this context. This study examines the dynamics of student adaptation while learning English with a research focus usingthe the components of personality system model developed by McCrae and Costa (2003). Using a phenomenological research desain, data were explored through semi-structured in-depth interviews from one male student and two female students at a high school in Bandung. The results of the data analysis found that the dynamics of adaptation during English learning does not only occur in the context of classroom learning instead, it also includes learning processes outside the classroom. There are internal factors that play a role in student adaptation include self-efficacy, independence, and personality traits. On the other hand, the external factors include language immersion, parental encouragement, and extramural English.Further recommendations are explained based on the findings of this study. Based on the discussion in this study, there are recommendations aimed at students, parents, and teachers of English subjects to maximize the utilization of the factors that play a role in the process of learning English. Recommendations for future research are to conduct further studies on the self-reliance factor and its relation to the process English language acquisition and conduct similar studies in the context of other foreign language acquisition.
