Abstract

Speaking skill is important to Indonesian EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students since the large number of students who want to study English in order to be able to use English for communicative purposes. Meanwhile, a number of reports show that Indonesian EFL students have a great number of errors when speaking. The errors include grammatical accuracy, vocabulary and interactive communication. To respond to the problems, the teachers and language practisioners have important roles in fostering students’ ability to speak English well through meaningful techniques. One of the techniques is Picture Narrating. The present study entitled The Use of Picture Narrating in Teaching Speaking was aimed at investigating if Picture Narrating was effective in developing students’ speaking ability. In addition, it tried to find out students’ responses toward the use of Picture Narrating in developing students’ speaking ability. The study was conducted at one of the vocational high schools in Bandung with 30 sample students of second graders. The study employed quasi-experimental with non-equivalent groups design, both experimental and control groups were given pre-test and post-tets and also interview on the use of Picture Narrating. The experimental group was treated by using Picture Narrating for five weeks. Students’ speaking test was analyzed using t-test SPSS version 16.0. The findings indicated that the use of Picture Narrating was effective in developing students’ speaking ability. This study also revealed that Picture Narrating could draw students’ motivation to speak in the class, add students’ vocabularies, and foster students to understand the material easily. The appropriate design of learning objectives which considers students’ characteristics may ease teachers to use Picture Narrating technique in developing students’ speaking ability. The teachers may try to take advantages of Picture Narrating technique to be used in their classroom activities.
