Abstract
Penggunaan materi otentik banyak disarankan diimplementasikan di kelas Bahasa Inggris oleh para peneliti untuk memberikan bahasa dalam konteks yang asli kepada siswa dan menciptakan atmosfir yang bagus di dalam pembelajaran bahasa. Namun, para guru harus menyiapkan dan memperhatikan dengan baik ketika menggunakan materi otentik didalam proses pengajaran. Maka, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mencari tahu bagaimana guru memilih, menyesuaikan, dan mengatur materi otentik, bagaimana mereka mengintegrasikan penggunaan materi otentik didalam kelas, dan tantangan yang dihadapi oleh para guru dan siswa dalam penggunaan materi otentik. Studi kasus adalah pendekatan yang digunakan oleh peneliti. Observasi kelas, wawancara, dan angket digunakan dan diadaptasi untuk mendapatkan data. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa dua guru sering menggunakan materi otentik didalam kelas. Hasil lain juga menunjukkan bahwa para guru memilih materi otentik berdasarkan beberapa kriteria dan memodifikasi materi tersebut berdasarkan kemampuan para siswa dan memberikannya materi yang sesuai. Beberapa tantangan dihadapi oleh para guru dan siswa seperti kosa kata yang tidak familiar, aksen dan logat yang aneh, dan struktur yang rumit. The use of authentic materials is suggested by many scholars to be implemented in classrooms to present students’ language in real-life contexts and create a good atmosphere in language learning. However, teachers have to be well-prepared and pay much attention when using authentic materials in their teaching process. Hence, this study was aimed at finding out how teachers select, adapt and adjust authentic materials, how they integrate these materials and challenges faced by teachers and students in using authentic materials. The researcher used a case study approach. The classroom observation, interview and a set of questionnaires were used and adapted to obtain the data. It found that two teachers often used authentic materials in their EFL classrooms. The result also showed the teachers selected authentic materials based on some criteria and modified the resources based on students’ ability and gave them appropriate materials. Several challenges were faced by teachers and students such as unfamiliar vocabularies, strange accent and dialect, and complex structures.
