Abstract

This study examines the teaching learning process in a writing class and the students’ achievement in writing academic essays. It is a qualitative case study because it focused more on both the process and the product. This research was conducted at a School of Business and Management in Bandung employing classroom observation, students’ text analysis, teacher’s interview and teacher’s and students’ questionnaires. The main sources of data were qualitative data which were analyzed and interpreted through qualitative procedures. This study was conducted to describe a writing program particularly on academic essays in an undergraduate level of non-English faculty in Indonesian contexts. The results of the study have revealed that the teaching learning process has fulfilled the requirements of teaching academic writing such as stages of writing process done, including the process and aspects of writing and the approach and strategies used as suggested by Feez & Joyce (1998), Brown (2001), Hyland (2003) and Richard & Miller (2008). Nevertheless, there were some issues that still need improvement particularly in terms of the ability to argue and language aspects. In addition, to get an optimum achievement, the students need more time to do class activities than they have had; that is, two (2) credit semester system In conclusion, it is said that such teaching-learning process in an academic writing program as what has been observed can be done in an undergraduate level. This research is also expected to give benefits to the readers who are interested in teaching writing for undergraduate students.
