Abstract

In a State Polytechnic in Lampung, General English is studied in the first three semesters. Meanwhile, students of Accounting Study Program continue to learn English for Business, for the next two semesters. English for Business is part of English for Specific Purposes, in which all decisions as to content and method are based on learners’ needs. In order to capture the English needs of students of Accounting study program, a needs analysis is required. As such, this study was guided by three main purposes, namely: a) to investigate the English needs of students of Accounting study program, b) to analyze whether the existing syllabus and textbooks have covered the English needs of students of Accounting study program, and c) to select materials which are consistent with the English needs of students of Accounting study program. Questionnaire, interview, and documentary analysis were chosen to collect the data. The results indicate that a) English writing skill and Accounting technical terms are the most required to included in materials development, b) the existing syllabus and textbooks need to be adapted to meet the English needs of students of Accounting study program, and c) the materials that are consistent with students needs for ESP class are those which emphasized writing skill and specialized in Accounting field.
