Abstract

To date, multimodal texts are getting popular and have been widely used for myriad of purposes. In educational field, numerous studies were conducted to analyze textbooks but digital multimodal products have received less attention. Considering this issue, a descriptive qualitative design was employed in this study focusing on student-created Digital Storytelling (DST) videos as a type of digital multimodal texts. Systemic Functional (SF) Approach was employed to analyze the data, especially in terms of Ideational metafunction, comprising Halliday and Matthiessen’s (2004) Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), Kress and van Leeuwen’s (2006) Visual Grammar, and Unsworth’s (2006a, 2006b) and Chan’s (2011) theories on Intersemiotic relations. These three major frameworks were utilized to reveal the students’ choice of language and images realized in DST, the intersemiotic relation between verbal and visual modes, and the pedagogical implications. The findings discovered that the students had a tendency to choose typical process types to construe meanings in autobiographical recount involving a Relational process in verbal texts and a Symbolic Attributive process in visual images. Moreover, it was found that the students were commonly used Exposition to relate verbal and visual modes. In brief, this study highlights the importance of teaching genre to understand the purposes of communication realized in various settings.; Hingga saat ini, teks multimodal semakin populer dan telah banyak digunakan dalam berbagai macam tujuan.
