AN ANALYSIS OF THEME AND THEME PROGRESSION ON STUDENTS’ DISCUSSION TEXTS

Mohamad Ridwan Mustofa, - (2018) AN ANALYSIS OF THEME AND THEME PROGRESSION ON STUDENTS’ DISCUSSION TEXTS. S1 thesis, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia.

    Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate how students organize their ideas in the Discussion text in terms of theme and theme progression. This study employed a descriptive method which embraces the characteristics of a case study approach. The data are from six discussion texts written by third semester students. The texts were divided into three levels according to students’ achievements. The texts were analyzed using Theme System derived from Systemic Functional Linguistics proposed by Halliday. The findings showed that in terms of the schematic structure, most of the texts have fulfilled the criteria of discussion text which indicates students’ understanding about how to write the text according to the criteria. In organizing the texts, various theme choices are employed such as marked and unmarked topical theme, textual theme, and interpersonal theme to make their texts coherent. In terms of theme progression, the reiteration pattern occurs dominantly which indicates that the texts have a clear and strong theme focus.

Dalam penyusunn teks, berbagai pilihan tema digunakan seperti marked and unmarked topical theme, textual theme, and interpersonal theme untuk membuat teks mereka koheren.
