Abstract

This study is aimed to investigate the extent of development of students’ writing ability in an IELTS preparation course and the influence from the test on their learning process. This research was designed as a case study with qualitative approach and it involved two IELTS preparation course participants who have different academic background and different experience with IELTS. The data were collected through within-method procedure from the students’ writing scripts, questionnaires, and interviews. The result shows that at first both students could be regarded as modest writers and it turned out that they maintained different course of progress from time to time, forward for Maria and backward for Angel. Also, it was inferred that although the students were influenced by different factors in extrinsic, intrinsic, and test categories from a washback model of students’ learning (Shih, 2007), the impact on their learning process was considerably high. Further, it was identified that the impact was almost similar for them in terms of the content of learning, time of learning, learning strategies, learning motivation, and test anxiety.-- Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tingkat perkembangan kemampuan menulis peserta kursus persiapan IELTS dan pengaruh dari tes tersebut pada proses belajar mereka. Penelitian ini disusun sebagai sebuah studi kasus melalui pendekatan kualitatif yang melibatkan dua peserta kursus persiapan IELTS yang berbeda dalam hal latar belakang pendidikan dan pengalaman dengan IELTS. Data penelitian ini diperoleh melalui within-method procedure menggunakan instrumen tulisan peserta, kuesioner, dan wawancara. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa pada awalnya kedua peserta dapat dikategorikan sebagai modest writers, namun selanjutnya mereka menunjukan arah perkembangan yang berbeda dari waktu ke waktu; Maria mengalami peningkatan, sedangkan Angel mengalami penurunan. Kemudian, dapat disimpulkan juga bahwa meskipun kedua peserta terpengaruh oleh faktor yang berbeda di kategori ekstrinsik, intrinsik, dan test dari pada a washback model of students’ learning (Shih, 2007), pengaruhnya pada proses belajar mereka cukup signifikan. Selain itu, dari penelitian ini dapat diketahui juga bahwa pengaruhnya hampir sama diantara mereka yaitu pada hal konten pembelajaran, waktu belajar, strategi belajar, motivasi belajar, dan kecemasan terhadap test.
