Abstract

This research is aimed at investigating the strategies used by the teacher in using the selected textbook for teaching and learning activities. A qualitative case study is employed with three instruments to collect data, namely interview, observation, and document analysis. The respondent of this research is an English teacher at one public senior high school in Bandung. The findings reveal that the teacher is capable to fulfill the strategies in the language teaching situation by using selected textbook based on Brown’s (1995) theory. The strategies used by the teacher are 1) analyzing the students’ needs; 2) designing the learning objectives; 3) organizing the materials; 4) presenting the materials; and 5) selecting the materials. On the other hand, the teacher has difficulty in implementing what is written in the lesson plan with the materials from the textbook which is taught in the classroom. The teacher also has difficulty in conducting the various activities. However, the strategy used by the teacher can be understood by the students and improve the students’ abilities.
