Abstract

The issues that are mainly discussed in the paper are the type of interference used in research subject’s Sundanese to his Indonesian and the possible factors that may cause the phenomenon which are based on Weinrich’s study (1970). The research aims at investigating Sundanese interference type from the most-occurring to the least one so that the possible psycholinguistics factors can be suggested. To be able to do so, descriptive qualitative method was employed in the study as this method seem to appropriate in describing a real phenomenon which particularly deals with spoken language. The study results showed that out of 129 utterances, Sundanese particles are the interference forms that appear mostly in research subject’s utterances. With the total occurence of 73 times, Sundanese particles rank the first with the percentage of 36,14%. The next category that is placed as the second is Sundanese affixes. With the total occurrence of 49, the category which is reflected through the research subject’s utterances which combine Indonesian words with Sundanese affixes holds 31,68%. Sundanese nouns as the third most frequent used interference occur 39 times with the percentage of 19,31%. Sundanese verbs occur 18 times with the percentage of 8,91%. The last category is Sundanese adjectives that occur 8 times with the percentage of 3,96%. In terms of factors that may contribute to the language interference that are proposed by Weinrich (1970), there are four factors that are assumed to contribute to subject’s Sundanese interference toward his Indonesian learning process. Those factors are subject’s bilingualism background, his disloyalty to target language, the needs of synonym in Sundanese, and his limitation of Indonesian vocabulary. Due to the age condition of research’s subject, Weinrich’s last interference factor that is pride and style cannot be investigated.
