Abstract

The research entitled The Use of Audio and Printed Book in Teaching Speaking Skills is a quasi-experimental research with time series design conducted at the first grade of Junior High School in Bandung Regency. This research aims to find out if audio and printed book can improve students speaking skills and what students’ responses are towards the use of audio and printed book. This research was conducted based on the consideration that most EFL students still have lack of speaking skills due to their preference of using mother tongue even when they are in English class. Therefore, there should be an activity that can stimulate them to use English. The research was conducted in a class consisted of 17 participants. Eleven students were taken as the samples. To collect the data, speaking test was employed before and during the treatment (four times each) and the questionnaire was also used in this research. Students’ scores from the speaking test were analyzed through SPSS 17.0, while the questionnaire was analyzed using descriptive analyses. Monologue and Dialogue test (Brown, 2001) were employed. The finding shows that the students improved their speaking aspects; vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension. It is evidenced by comparing the scores before the treatment (M=57.45) and during the treatment (M=87.27). The questionnaire showed that the students were motivated in learning English during the treatment. Based on this research, it is suggested that audio and printed book can be part of students’ activity at both class and home.
