PENGARUH STORYTELLING DENGAN KOMUNIKASI TOTAL TERHADAP PENINGKATAN KETERAMPILAN MENYIMAK SISWA TUNARUNGU

Afriadi, Joni (2014) PENGARUH STORYTELLING DENGAN KOMUNIKASI TOTAL TERHADAP PENINGKATAN KETERAMPILAN MENYIMAK SISWA TUNARUNGU. S2 thesis, Univeritas Pendidikan Indonesia.

    Abstract

keterampilan menyimak siswa tunarungu.
Hearing impairment has an impact on the developmental aspects of
children who suffer from pre-lingual hearing impairment; one of the aspects is
language development. The ultimate aspect of language development is listening
skills that can be done through storytelling. The research aimed to find the
influence of storytelling with total communication on the improvement of
listening skills of hearing-impaired students. The materials for storytelling were
taken from the Big Book published by Mizan for toddlers told by their parents.
The method employed in this research was Single Subject Research (SSR) using
A-B design model. The subjects of the research were four eight-year-old hearingimpaired
students, consisting of one male student (SMR), who had once used
hearing aid, and three female students (AA, SS, and ONR), who had never used
hearing aids and were on the second grade of a special needs school. Based on the
data processed, SMR gained a mean level score at the baseline phase as much as
5.00 and 8.77 at the intervention phase. Meanwhile, AA gained a mean level score
of 2.71 at the baseline phase, and 4.11 at the intervention phase. SS gained a mean
level score of 2.14 at the baseline phase and 4.44 at the intervention phase, while
ONR gained 2.28 at the baseline phase and 4.22 at the intervention phase,
respectively. Then, it can be concluded that the listening skills of the four subjects
could be improved through story telling activities with total communication. The
results of this research are expected to be made considerations by parents, who are
encouraged to spend their time reading books to their children, and it is even
better if the children use hearing aids. For the next researchers, they are
recommended to research the implementation of storytelling on hearing-impaired
children who have received cochlear implants and measure the impacts on some
aspects, such as phonetic awareness, reading and writing skills.
