Abstract
Based on observations, it has been found that students still possess low proficiency in these aspects. To address this issue, there is a need for the development of Microbiology lectures capable of enhancing life skills and instilling a sense of community concern. The Science Technology Society (STS) model and Metacognitive Self-Regulation (MSR) strategy exhibit characteristics that contribute to the development of life skills in Microbiology lectures, enabling students to help solve microbiological issues within society. The research aims to develop the life skills of prospective teachers in Microbiology courses through the use of the integrated Metacognitive Self-Regulation (MSR) strategy and Science Technology Society (STS) model. This study employs a developmental research approach carried out in four stages: Preliminary Study, Planning, Development, and Implementation. The research took place from 2020 to 2021, with trial and implementation involving Biology Education students in the fifth semester during the academic years 2020/2021 and 2021/2022. Life skills, as observed, refer to Marzano's (2007) framework, including cognitive, interpersonal, and personal abilities. Cognitive abilities cover retrieval, comprehension, analysis, and knowledge utilization, measured using essay questions. Interpersonal skills involve communication and collaboration, assessed through observation instruments, while personal self-efficacy is measured using Likert scale questionnaires. Cognitive ability data were analyzed using N-Gain calculations, while interpersonal and personal ability data were descriptively analyzed through mean calculations. Correlations between MSR and life skills aspects, as well as correlations between cognitive ability and other skills, were also analyzed. The research results indicate an improvement in students' cognitive, interpersonal, and personal skills. Positive correlations were found between MSR and cognitive, personal, and interpersonal skills. Additionally, a positive correlation was observed between cognitive ability and interpersonal and personal skills. In conclusion, the integrated MSR and STS exhibit characteristics that can enhance students' life skills, positively impacting their ability to simulate outreach activities in the community. This demonstrates a sense of community concern in assisting in solving microbiological issues within society.
