Abstract

The research is entitled “Teacher’s Strategies in Teaching English Vocabulary to Young Learners (A descriptive study of a teacher’s strategies at one a kindegarten in Tasikmalaya)”. It is aimed at finding out the difficulties faced by the teacher and teacher’s strategies in teaching English vocabulary to young learner. To collect the data, there were some techniques applied: observations (video recording) and interviews. Since the research is a descriptive study, the data were analyzed using the framework developed by Moon (2005), on his book entitled “Children Learning English”. The findings reveal that there are some difficulties in teaching vocabulary to young learners such as limited time, adjustment to children’s language, children’s interest; children limited attention span, and children’s level knowledge. There are six strategies used by the teacher to overcome the difficulties she faced. The strategies are (1) Demonstration, (2) QCC, (3) Scaffolding, (4) Drilling, (5) Song, and (6) Game. Therefore, it will be very useful if other researchers who will conduct the same topic may use the systematic sequences in teaching English vocabulary above in different level of learners.
