Abstract

Ocean literacy is a thorough understanding of the relationship between the sea and humans. Ocean literacy is also part of environmental literacy needed to increase insight and understanding of the reciprocal relationship between the sea and humans. From pre-research data according to teachers and students in the Riau Archipelago Province, ocean literacy is still rarely associated with subjects. The aim of this research was to produce a design and development of an Indonesian micro curriculum infused with ocean literacy. The research design used is Design Based Research (DBR), starting from analysis and exploration; design and development; as well as evaluation and reflection. The participants in this study involved Indonesian language teachers and secondary high school students in the Riau Archipelago Province. At the analysis and exploration stage, this study conducted problem analysis through literature review, factual condition analysis, and competency needs assessment. The factual condition analysis of students involved 174 students and 116 teachers. Furthermore, the ocean literacy competency needs assessment involved 116 Indonesian language teachers in the Riau Archipelago Province. A total of 4 competencies and 11 indicators of ocean literacy, namely social-emotional competence, acting for collective welfare, promoting sustainable development goals, and respecting others through ocean literacy. Then at the design and development stage, this curriculum design uses a subject-matter centered approach and a backward design model. In the final stages of evaluation and reflection, this study involved 4 experts to test the feasibility of the curriculum prototype document. After due diligence, this research was piloted on a limited basis in one of the secondary schools in Bintan Regency. A limited trial of the curriculum design was carried out for one month with 144 students participating. In the final stage after the trial, this study explored learning satisfaction with 111 students participating in the questionnaire and followed up by interviewing 5 students and 1 teacher to dig deeper into learning reflection information. The result of this study was a design document for a secondary school Indonesian micro curriculum that has been infused with ocean literacy competencies. The response results related to curriculum design found that language learning infused with ocean literacy is important and responded positively to encouraging sympathy and responsible behavior towards the environment and coastal communities.
