    Abstract

Since information and knowledge are mostly provided in the form of written text, reading skill is very crucial to master. In the level of senior high school, teaching reading has some specific objectives. One of them is to develop students’ basic comprehension skills so that they can read and understand texts of general nature. To respond to the objectives, the teachers have to design methods, materials, and approach that help students to improve their reading ability, especially in their reading comprehension. One of the methods considered being able to improve students’ reading comprehension skill is Cooperative Learning: Think Pair Share (TPS). The present study entitled The Application of Cooperative Learning: Think Pair Share (TPS) in improving students’ reading comprehension was aimed at investigating the use of TPS method in improving students’ reading comprehension, and finding out students’ opinions toward the use of TPS in teaching reading. By using quasi-experimental with nonequivalent groups design, this study administered pre-test, post-test, observation list, and questionnaire to obtain the data. The data were analyzed using independent t-test SPSS version 17.0. The findings indicated that the application of TPS is able to improve students’ reading comprehension. In addition, TPS method is advantageous to draw students’ motivation to learn, to create fun learning climate, to give the chance for students to share their ideas, and to increase the students’ self-confidence. According to the advantages of the method, it is recommended for teachers to apply the method of Cooperative Learning: Think Pair Share (TPS) in their teaching activities. Additionally, it is also beneficial for researchers to conduct the study of using TPS in other area of research.
