Abstract

This study reported on the analysis of translation procedures found in different language functions in dialogues in The Alchemist novel by Paulo Coelho. The study employed a qualitative research design. The data were dialogues taken from the novel which were identified and classified based on language functions (Buhler) and then analyzed based on translation procedures (Newmark, 1988: 81). The findings revealed that the language functions found in the novel dialogues were 152 (65.8%) expressive function, 46 (19.91%) informative function, and 33 (14.29%) vocative function. After classifying the procedures into each language function, it was revealed that the translation procedure mostly found in expressive function was 34 (22.37%) paraphrase; 17 (36.96%) couplets in informative function; and 15 (45.45%) literal in vocative function. Based on the research, a translator should use paraphrase procedure in expressive function in novel dialogues to make the TL more imaginative and expressive; couplets procedure in informative function in order to make the TL text sounds natural and easily to be understood by the readers; literal procedure in vocative function in order to produce accurate and clear translation.
