Abstract

This research paper is entitled The Concept of Beauty: Women’s Body Image in Cherie Bennett’s ‘Life in the Fat Lane’. The purpose of this study is to draw the portrayal of women in terms of industrial body image. To investigate the portrayal, the qualitative descriptive method is applied in this study. Afterward, it employs gynocriticism—women writer’s point of view of women character, as one of the approaches in the feminist literary criticism to analyze the text. The writer only focuses on two main concerns which are the presentation of body image in the text and the cultural forces around women. The results of the research show that slender is the desirable women’s body image which portrays women as beautiful, popular, confident, desirable by men and adorable. On the contrary, the undesirable women’s body image is fat and this includes the portrayal of women as ugly, unpopular, insecure, undesirable by men and oppressed. On the other hand, the cultural forces around women that shape their body image include the family, friends, social events and mass media. Those evidences show that women are manipulated by the definition of beauty proposed by the industry.
