Abstract
ABSTRACT The research paper is entitled Fractured Fairy Tales: A Feminist Poststructuralist Perspective on the Portrayal of Princess in Shrek the Novels. It aims to identify how princess in the three novels is portrayed and how those portrayals are relevant to feminist poststructuralist point of view. To collect the data, some techniques were implemented, namely close reading and textual analysis. Qualitative and descriptive perspectives were used to analyze the collected data by applying the theory of feminist poststructuralist point of views. The results of a study show that the three novels of Shrek present different figure of princess from the common perspective of fairy tales. In this case, the princess in Shrek the Novels is portrayed as an ugly princess but she is braver and smarter than other princesses. In contrast, a princess, in mostly fairy tales, is perceived as a beautiful princess who is weak and passive. The portrayal of princess in the three novels is in line with feminist poststructuralist point of view; using body as a powerful object. These portrayals can also be taken as an example of the woman who appreciates her body. Moreover, the portrayals of the princess in the three novels show that it is an example of fractured fairy tales. Since fairy tales are literary work which is important for children, it is suggested for further study to analyze some fairy tales’ aspects by using other theories such as deconstruction and self agency to deepen analysis of fairy tales.
