Abstract

The present study investigates the floutings of Grice’s Cooperative Principle in the Democrazy political comedy programs. The study aims to identify the types of conversational maxims that are flouted in the Democrazypolitical comedy program and the perlocutionary effects of such floutings on the casts. This research employs a qualitative approach and a descriptive method. The main source of the data of this research was conversation among all of the casts in Democrazy Show. The data were obtained from the program by recording the program, then transcribing them. The obtained data were analyzed based on Grice’s CP and its conversational maxims and the theory of perlocutionary acts by Austin. The findings of this study reveal that all types of maxims were flouted with the highest flouting in the maxim of quality (38.28%). The second most flouted maxim isthe maxim of manner (34,56%), then it was followed by the flouting of maxim of quantity (13.58%) and maxim of relevance (13.58%). The perlocutionary effects occurredare context dependent. They could be amusing, surprising, confirming, alarming, appreciating, asking, ignoring, refusing, embarrasing, pressing, correcting, negating, informing, distracting, deterring, suspending, complaining, and impressing effects.The most frequently occurring perlocutionary effect is confirming. In conclusion, the research shows that creating jokes by flouting the Grice’s CP Maximcreated humorous effects of the serious topics in Democrazy program. Therefore, the combination of the serious program and funny jokes is acreative idea to deliver the latest political issues in the country.
