Abstract

The main objectives of the study are to find out whether or not the use of role play is more effective than the conventional technique in teaching speaking and to find out whether the role play makes learning more meaningful for the students. A quasi-experimental design was applied to gain the data and the instruments used were pre-test, post-test, questionnaire and interview. Pretest and posttest are calculated by using. The computation of pretest shows that the tobt is lower than tcrit and the null hypothesis is accepted, it means that the two samples are from the same population and there is no significant difference between experimental group and control group in their speaking skill. It implies that both experimental group and control group relatively have the same initial ability in speaking skill, while the computation of posttest shows that the tobt is higher than tcrit and the null hypothesis is rejected, and it can be inferred that there is a significant difference between experimental group and control group in their speaking skill after the treatment and the calculation of the effect size shows that there is a medium effect of independent variable, that is role play to the dependent variable, that is students’ speaking skill, and it means that there is a significant difference in teaching speaking skill using role play and conventional technique. The result of questionnaire and interview show that most of the students agree that the role play helps them understand English better, it also helps them to apply the language more easily to the new situations. However, some of the students find some difficulties in modifying the dialogue for the role play and how to apply it, so, it is important to give more modeling for the dialogue and how to apply it.
