Abstract
This paper reports the use of journal in teaching recount text. Analysis of the research literature in teaching writing through journal revealed that journal provides a starting point for building students’ self-confidence. The participants of this research were the second graders of one of junior high school in Bandung, Indonesia. This sresearch employed a quasi experimental design, experimental group (N=32) and control group (N=32), to examines the effectiveness of using journal in teaching recount texts. The questionnaire were administered to identify the students’ responses toward the use of journal in writing recount text. The main results were: 1. The experimental group scored significantly higher on measures reflecting the use of journal in writing recount text than the control group (p=0.000). 2. Journal helped the students in gaining their writing skills such as improving their vocabulary and grammar. The results of the research were consistent with previous work performed by Laura Black which showed that by using daily journal writing, stundets’ writing improved. Based on these findings, it is recommended that journal be used in teaching recount text.
