Abstract

This study entitled “The Use of Snake Path Game in Teaching Vocabulary to Young Learners: A Quasi Experimental Study of Fifth Grade Students in Elementary School in Bandung” is aimed at investigating the effect of Snake Path Game on students’ vocabulary mastery as well as finding out the students’ responses toward the use of Snake Path Game. The design used in this study was quasi experimental. Seventy fifth graders from two classes at one primary school in Bandung were involved. The data were obtained from a pre-test, post-test, questionnaires and interviews. Vocabulary test data were analyzed quantitatively by independent-test. The findings indicate that the use of Snake Path Game is effective in improving students’ vocabulary mastery (tobt1.891>tcrit1.6676). The results show that the use of Snake Path Game promotes students’ interest and motivation in learning English vocabulary. Therefore, it makes the teaching and learning process more fun. This atmosphere help the students learn and retain new words faster and better. The game also provides pictorial cards, cue cards and repetitive game task which helps students memorize vocabulary easier as well as understand the words and texts better. It is recommended for teachers to use Snake Path Game as an alternative technique in teaching vocabulary. In addition, teachers’ competence in organizing teaching activities, selecting appropriate media and giving clear instructions is necessary in applying this game. Moreover, for further studies, it would be good if Snake Path Game is used in teaching other language skills and research designs with different levels of sample or population.
