Abstract
This study entitled “The Representation of the Ahmadiyah Attack Incident in The Jakarta Post and ANTARA News Articles” investigates the way the Ahmadiyah Attack incident including the social actors are represented in both newspapers as well as the ideologies underlying such representations. Three articles from The Jakarta Post and three articles from ANTARA News were purposively taken as the data of analysis. This study employs a qualitative method by applying Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Hallidayan Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) as the tool of analysis. Findings indicate that The Jakarta Post represents the incident as a horrifying event and puts the Ahmadis as the victims. The Ahmadis was heavily topicalized (16.67%) instead of the incident itself (8.33%). In terms of transitivity, the Ahmadis was mostly positioned as the goal in material process (50%). Based on the textual analysis, it is apparent that The Jakarta Post tends to hold the ideologies of transcendental humanism and liberalism. On the contrary, ANTARA News represents the incident as a sensitive event regarding its relation to the religion and faith. Therefore, the actors were mostly elided by foregrounding the incident (12.12%). The government was dominantly topicalized (15.15%) and it was represented as the entity which plays a substantial part in responding the incident in verbal process (43.48%). ANTARA News serves as a national news agency which tends to stand in a neutral area.
