Abstract

The present study is entitled “Gender Roles and Spousal Authority in A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini”. It analyzes the roles of spouses and spousal authority in an Afghanistan setting. The aims of the study are twofolds. First, it attempts to look at the roles of husband and wife in the novel; second, it tries to discover the way spousal authority is established in the context of Afghanistan’s culture. This study applies a qualitative descriptive method utilizing textual analysis approach in order to answer the research questions. Gender roles and stereotypes according to Winclaw (2011), power and patriarchy from Komter (1989) and Lukes (2005) are the major theoretical frameworks used in analyzing the data. The findings show that the husband is given the role as the authority and breadwinner in the family while the wife as subordinate and housekeeper. It is found that spousal authority is maintained and established through physical, verbal, and psychological abuse. As a result, in Afghanistan, abuses are influenced by cultural values where wife is justified to be oppressed and abused by husband. It is also indicated that the roles of husband and wife and the authority given to them are influenced by the social and cultural context specifically chosen for the novel.
