Abstract

The research was aimed at finding out the vocative expressions that are used in the movie and also to find out the translation procedure that the translator used in translating the vocative expressions, and to find out the dominant translation procedure that is used in the movie. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method in collecting and analyzing the data. The data were taken from the movie script. 163 items were drawn randomly from the Harry Potter and The half-blood prince movie script. The vocative expressions were analyzed by using the theory of language function proposed by Buhlers (cited in Newmark 1988). In addition, the translation procedures in translating the vocative expressions were analyzed by using the theory of the translation procedures proposed by Newmark (1988). The findings of the research showed that from 163 items, there were 42 (26%) usages of the exclamation expression, 68 (42%) usages of the command expression, 32 (20%) usages of assertion expression, 21 (12%) usages of the question expression. 10 translation procedures were used to translate 163 items of vocative expressions sample. They were 25 (15%) usages of literal, 58 (36%) usages of paraphrase, 23 (14%) usages of reduction, 25 (15%) usages of synonymy, 8 (5%) usages of expansion, 7 (4%) usages of modulation, 6 (4%) usages of cultural equivalence, 5 (3%) usages of transference, 4 (3%) usages of compensation, and 2 (1%) usages of couplet. Finally, the most dominant translation procedure that is used in the movie is paraphrase procedure. There are 4 types of vocative expressions that are found in the movie, command expression becomes the most vocative expression used, while question become the least expression used in the movie. The translator have to find the most appropriate words to translate the vocative expressions, that is why from 19 translation procedures proposed by Newmark, there were only 10 translation procedures applied in the movie.
