Abstract

The present research entitled Being a Female Leader: An Analysis of Gender Performativity, Subjectivity, and Agency in Suzanne Collins’ Mockingjay is a textual analysis of Suzanne Collins’ fantasy fiction focusing on the main female character in the novel to uncover the portrayal of a female leader in relation to the notion of gender performativity as well as to unearth the female leader’s subjectivity and agency throughout the story. The discussion is framed within the theories of gender performativity (Butler, 1990), subjectivity, and agency (e.g. Butler, 1993-1997; Mansfield, 2000; Nealon & Giroux, 2003; Hall, 2004; and Woodward, 2004). The research employs qualitative method in which the data are in the form of textual evidences and are analyzed by using content analysis that passes through two levels of analysis – describing and interpreting the data. The results demonstrate that the main female character’s gender performativity is revealed to portray the female leader based on the main female character’s repetitive actions as a leader; the issue of subjectivity is presented to uncover that a female leader cannot escape from being subjected to her society to be the proper female leader based on the society’s expectations; while the issue of agency is presented to emphasize the female leader’s possession of power that she is aware of possible choices whether to conform or to subvert the social expectations of a proper female leader.
