Abstract

Communication is a basic ability that must be possessed by every individual to understand the situation, including for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The way ASD children communicate nowadays is to use non-verbal communication such as gestures so that they face the difficulty conveying their wishes, especially with regard to daily activities. The purpose of this study is to develop E-PECS (Electronic Picture Exchange Communication System) media to improve communication skill in children with ASD. This study used a mixed research method consisting of qualitative descriptive and then conducted a trial of E-PECS media through a Single Subject Research (SSR) research design involving 1 child with ASD grade III in SLB X Kab. Bandung Barat. For data collection, it was conducted through interviews, observations, and documentations using the qualitative data collection technique. While quantitatively it was conducted using performance test. The qualitative analysis was carried out using data triangulation technique, while quantitatively it used in conditions analysis and inter-conditions analysis. The result of the study and the conclusion obtained are the Android-based E-PECS media has been developed which has audio and visual flexibility and had been tested with the results saying that using this E-PECS media was improving the communication skills of children with ASD as indicated by the increase in results at baseline-1 (A-1) and baseline-2 (A-2). The development of this E-PECS media can be used as an alternative to Android-based media that can be used by parents effectively to improve the communication of ASD children that can be adapted to the child's needs.
