Abstract

Anak tunagrahita ringan memiliki kesulitan dalam pembelajaran akademik salah satunya kesulitan dalam kemampuan membaca. Permasalahan yang peneliti temukan dalam penelitian ini terdapat dua siswa tunagrahita ringan yang duduk di kelas IV SDLB C di SLBN B Pembina Tingkat Provinsi Jawa Barat yang memiliki kesulitan dalam membaca permulaan pada aspek membaca kata. Berdasarkan hal tersebut, peneliti tertarik untuk melakukan penelitian dengan tujuan untuk mengetahui penggunaan metode VAKT terhadap peningkatan kemampuan membaca permulaan pada siswa tunagrahita ringan kelas IV SDLB B di SLBN B Pembina Tingkat Provinsi Jawa Barat. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan metode eksperimen dan desain penelitian subjek tunggal atau Single Subject Research (SSR) dengan desain A-B-A. Berdasarkan temuan dan analisis data diperoleh peningkatan mean level pada setiap kondisi. Sebelum diberikan intervensi kemampuan membaca permulaan siswa tunagrahita ringan masih sangat rendah, mereka belum mampu membaca kata secara utuh, dan membaca kata dengan di eja per huruf. Setelah diberikan intervensi menggunakan metode VAKT, kemampuan membaca permulaan siswa tunagrahita ringan mengalami peningkatan, mereka mampu membaca kata secara utuh tanpa dieja. Sehingga dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan metode VAKT dapat meningkatkan kemampuan membaca permulaan siswa tunagrahita ringan di kelas IV SLBN B Pembina Tingkat Provinsi Jawa Barat. Mild mentally retarded children have difficulties in academic learning, one of which is difficulty in reading ability. The problem that the researchers found in this study were two mild mentally retarded students who were in class IV SDLB C at SLBN B Pembina Level West Java Province who had difficulties in reading beginning in the aspect of reading words. Based on this, the researcher was interested in conducting research with the aim of knowing the use of the VAKT method in improving early reading skills in grade IV SDLB B students at SLBN B Pembina West Java Province. This study uses a quantitative approach with experimental methods and a single subject research design or Single Subject Research (SSR) with an A-B-A design. Based on the findings and data analysis, it was obtained an increase in the mean level in each condition. Before being given the intervention, the initial reading ability of mild mentally retarded students was still very low, they had not been able to read words as a whole, and read words spelled out letter by letter. After being given an intervention using the VAKT method, the initial reading ability of mild mentally retarded students increased, they were able to read words as a whole without spelling. So it can be concluded that the use of the VAKT method can improve the initial reading ability of students with mild mental retardation in class IV SLBN B Pembina West Java Province.
