Abstract

The fact that most of the students of Islamic junior high schools get many problems in writing becomes a well-built reason for the researcher to conduct his study in the field of writing. The research investigated the implementation of webbing technique to improve the students’ ability in writing recount paragraphs. Webbing is one of the brainstorming techniques in prewriting to lead the students finding out more easily main idea and supporting ideas in which the students usually get stuck on it. Recount paragraph is chosen as the topic since it is simple and should be mastered by the students. As the 2006 English curriculum suggests teachers to implement the GBA, the researcher conducted treatments under the GBA to lead the students to learn three things; learning language, learning through language, and learning about language. The researcher employed four stages of the GBA in teaching; building knowledge of the field, modeling, joint construction of text, and independent construction of text. The result of the study shows that the use of webbing technique in the experimental class is more effective to improve the students’ ability in writing recount paragraphs compared with guided writing, a teaching writing technique in which the teacher scaffolds the students by giving them leading stimuli questions. However, other writing researches are needed to enhance this study. The researcher also suggests other researchers to conduct more bottomless and more comprehensive studies to employ webbing combined with other techniques to be able to increase its effectiveness and decrease its weaknesses. It is better if the future researches are conducted in the form of true experimental designs.
