Abstract
This study aimed to investigate students’ opinions on English as a Lingua Franca in Indonesian ELT (English Language Teaching) classroom. This research employed a case study method using open-ended questionnaire and interviews to obtain the data. Grade eleven students from a high school in Bandung participated in this study (n=29). The students were expected to share their experience and knowledge regarding English language learning and the concept of ELF. The open-ended questionnaire consisted of 12 prompts on Google Form and the interview consisted of 16 questions (see Appendices). The researcher conducted the interviews online using a meeting app, Zoom, and analysed the transcription using qualitative analysis software, NVivo. The data from both open-ended questionnaire and interviews were analysed using thematic analysis. Two themes were organised, namely participants’ experience in learning English and participants’ opinions towards the diversity in English and ELF. The questionnaire respondents and interviewees had positive attitudes towards ELF-informed English teaching and learning activities.
