Abstract

-----Scientific literacy is one of the important ability for students in science learning. Scientific literacy in Indonesia, especially in elementary schools is still low. CTL therefore learning approach is applied to improve students' scientific literacy skills in science learning. The purpose of research was to determine student learning activities and increasing students' scientific literacy skills in science learning by applying the CTL learning approach. This research uses classroom action research (CAR) with Kemmis and Mc Taggart research design. The subjects of research were 28 fifth-grade students at one of the elementary school in Bekasi City. The research instrument used are scientific literacy test in the form of a written test, student activity observation sheets, and teacher activity observation sheets. The results of students’ science literacy test average score in the pre-cycle was 61.25 with a classical mastery percentage of 21.43%. The average score in the first cycle was 85.89 with a percentage of 78.57% and the average score in the second cycle rose to 92.32 with percentage of 96.43%. So the application of the CTL learning approach can improve students’ scientific literacy skills in science learning at the elementary school.
