Abstract

OPAC as a searching tool for bibliography sources in libraries provides convenience to meet information needs of users, where each user has different needs and characteristics. The existence of the OPAC at large libraries in Indonesia is dominated by conventional OPAC whose users are mostly adults, which the OPAC design is intended without adjusting to the ability of children. Children have different search and exploration strategies from those applied by adults. This study aims to develop a web-based child-friendly OPAC simulated prototype which was developed based on a simple search in basic child search strategy. The method used is Design & Development by adapting the stages of the prototyping model. The participants of this study consisted of two information technology experts and an expert at child information service & resource in the validation test, and ten librarians in the usability test. The data analysis technique is used descriptive statistical analysis and qualitative descriptive analysis. The Likert scale is used in descriptive statistics to assess the feasibility of the prototype test and qualitative descriptive to describe the results of the review of the participants. The results showed that the designed OPAC prototype was considered very feasible with a percentage result of 80.5% based on expert judgment validation tests by IT experts and children’s information service and resource expert, and was considered feasible with a percentage of 72.1% based on usability tests by librarians at Pustakalana Children’s Library, the Indonesia University of Education Library and Library of the Ministry of Education and Culture Republic of Indonesia.
