Abstract
Geography books are one of the best sources to support the development of geographic skills. Geography textbooks not only contain knowledge content but also geography textbooks must contribute to the development of geographic thinking skills. Quality textbooks develop students' geographical thinking skills. However, in reality, the students' geographic skills were very low. This study aims to, (1) analyze the quality of the presentation of material in the Geography textbook for SMA in developing students' geographic thinking skills, (2) Show the achievement of development indicators and geographic thinking in geography textbooks, and (3) assess the efforts of teachers and students in developing geographic thinking skills. The method used in this research is a descriptive survey. The sample taken is a sample of geography textbooks used in the city of Bandung, namely books published by “E” and by “Y”, a sample of teacher efforts and student efforts in improving geographic skills. The geographical textbook analysis was assisted by Beck and McKeown's analysis of the model and proportion technique analysis. The results of this study are (1) the two textbooks used are not suitable for use as an instructional tool in terms of their text structure, (2) media representation analysis shows that “E” geography textbook is more feasible in supporting geographic thinking skills, and (3) efforts to build skills thinking geographically without using books is good enough.
