Abstract

The Ability to represent the concepts of physics is an ability that must be possessed by someone in studying physics, because when someone understanding complex concepts is often difficult for student to undertand concepts when it expressed by only one representation format. One of important ability possessed by students is the ability to understand graphics. The purpose of this research is to get an overview of the graph understanding profile and the ability of student representation on the subject of kinematics. The research method that used is a descriptive exploratory method to obtain an information about the discovery of a variable, symptom, or state without any manipulation. The research design of this research is used a series of test were carried out that measured the understanding of graphics and the ability of representations that were operationally measured by the Test Understanding Graphics-Kinematics (TUG-K) and a test to measured the ability of student representations in the form of descriptions. The sample in this research is amounted to 194 students of class VIII in a middle school at Bandung City. The concepts tested in this study is the concepts about straight motion and Newton’s laws on the subjects of kinematics. The grading comprehension assessment is processed using descriptive statistics, and the results are categorized based on three levels namely High, Medium, and Low Level. The assessment used in the test of representation ability refers to multiple ways criteria. The result found from this studi were as many as 3,1% of students with High level category, 64,4% students with Medium level understanding category, and 29,9% of students with a Low level understanding category. The results of students' representation abilities in the aspect of the ability to construct new representations from the representations given are better than the aspects of the ability of free-body diagrams. Therefore, understanding graphs and the ability of free-body diagrams should be more practiced for students at the junior high school level to make it easier to understand the concepts of physics.
