Abstract

Kohesi adalah salah satu aspek penting pada sebuah teks. Salah satu alat kohesi yang dapat membantu membangun hubungan antar kalimat adalah konjungsi. Konjungsi memiliki dua jenis hubngan khusus yaitu hubungan internal dan eksternal, serta hubungan umum yaitu aditif, adversatif, kausal dan temporal (Halliday & Hasan, 1976). Dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis bagaimana kohesi dibangun melalui hubungan-hubungan konjungtif internal maupun eksternal pada teks eksposisi mahasiswa. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa terdapat 37 hubungan aditif internal (48.05%), 17 hubungan temporal internal (22.08%), 13 hubungan adversative internal (16.88%) dan 10 hubungan kausal internal (12.99%). Hubungan konjungtif internal menjadi hubungan yang dominan karena dalam teks eksposisi, mahasiswa memiliki kecenderungan untuk mengungkapkan evaluasi atau pendapat mereka tentang suatu peristiwa. Diharapkan ke depannya akan diadakan penelitian dengan topic yang sama dengan jenis teks dan tingkat pendidikan yang berbeda. One of cohesive devices that can help build the connectedness is conjunction. It expresses two specific relations covering the internal and external relations and four general relations including the additive, adversative, causal and temporal (Halliday & Hasan, 1976). By employing a descriptive qualitative method, this study aimed at investigating how cohesion is realized through the internal and external conjunctive relations in EFL learners’ exposition texts. The study revealed that the cohesion was realized mostly by the internal additive relations with 37 occurrences (48.05%), followed by the internal temporal with 17 occurrences (22.08%), the internal adversative with 13 occurrences (16.88%) and the internal causal with 10 occurrences (12.99%). The dominance of the internal conjunctive relations was because the students were expected to propose their evaluations in the exposition texts. It is suggested that further researchers could explore similar topic in different text types and different level.
