Abstract
Misalnya, penggambaran karater perempuan masih kurang dan cenderung terbatas, yang mengindikasikan bahwa karater perempuan digambarkan menjadi karakter yang kurang penting sehingga seringkali lebih tertindas dan rendah dibandingkan dengan karakter laki-laki;--- Due to the increase of awareness toward gender asymmetry in Indonesia, the current research aimed at investigating how gender was portrayed in an Indonesian secondary school English textbook for eleven graders. Content analysis was used to analyze the textual data obtained from several reading passages with reference to their gendered characters. The result showed that the characters of male and female were portrayed based on traditional views, which was plausible as culture value traded in society. Indonesian society tends to emphasize the character of males and females in many ways. As the domain of female portrayals were limited and deficient, it was indicated that female characters were trivialized and portrayed being oppressed and undervalued by their male counterpart
