Abstract

Learning English becomes meaningful and effective if students are given the opportunity to link their school activities to real-life experience. Students will also relate to the learning material when it is close to their life. For students of Islamic schools, the given material is expected to be in line with their need as Muslims. Therefore, Islamic texts are considered as an alternative material to be used in teaching reading in English class regarding its contextual content. This mixed method study is aimed at investigating the effect of teaching reading using Islamic texts on the students’ reading comprehension and their attitude toward the texts. The participants were 2 groups of 30 students of grade IX at an Islamic middle school in Bandung. The data collection was conducted by examining the students’ reading comprehension quantitatively to see the significant difference of their reading comprehension before and after using Islamic reading texts. The data was also supported with the result of the data analysis from observation and interview. Further, the students’ attitude toward the use of Islamic texts was also investigated by analyzing data questionnaire. The findings indicate that the students’ familiarity with the content builds their interest toward the texts and motivate them to read the texts. The use of Islamic texts in teaching reading was proven to significantly improve the students’ reading comprehension competence and also reward positive attitude from them.;---Belajar bahasa Inggris menjadi bermakna dan efektif jika siswa diberi kesempatan untuk menghubungkan kegiatan sekolah mereka dengan pengalaman nyata. Siswa juga akan berhubungan dengan materi pembelajaran bila mendekati kehidupan mereka. Bagi siswa sekolah Islam, materi yang diberikan diharapkan sesuai dengan kebutuhan mereka sebagai umat Islam. Oleh karena itu, teks-teks Islam dianggap sebagai bahan alternatif untuk digunakan dalam pengajaran membaca di kelas bahasa Inggris mengenai konten kontekstualnya. Studi metode campuran ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki pengaruh pengajaran membaca dengan menggunakan teks-teks Islam terhadap pemahaman bacaan siswa dan sikap mereka terhadap teks-teks tersebut. Peserta terdiri dari 2 kelompok siswa kelas IX kelas IX di sebuah sekolah menengah Islam di Bandung. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan memeriksa pemahaman bacaan siswa secara kuantitatif untuk melihat perbedaan pemahaman bacaan mereka yang signifikan sebelum dan sesudah menggunakan teks bacaan Islam. Data juga didukung dengan hasil analisis data dari observasi dan wawancara. Selanjutnya, sikap siswa terhadap penggunaan teks-teks Islam juga diselidiki dengan menganalisa kuesioner data. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa keakraban siswa dengan konten membangun minat mereka terhadap teks dan memotivasi mereka untuk membaca teks. Penggunaan teks-teks Islam dalam pengajaran membaca terbukti meningkatkan kompetensi pemahaman bacaan siswa secara signifikan dan juga memberi penghargaan positif terhadap mereka.
