Abstract
Empowerment is a term that can be used for many groups of people, such as old people or women. For women, empowerment helps them to take more control over their lives. This issue can be expressed in several ways, such as movie or song. Beyoncé is considered as a singer who often expresses this issue in her songs. Therefore, this descriptive qualitative study aims to discover and investigate female empowerment issue in the selected Beyoncé’s song lyrics which are Grown Woman, If I Were a Boy, Ring Off, Run the World (Girls), and ***Flawless by using orders of signification as proposed by Barthes (1957, as cited in Chandler, 2002) through six dimensions of female empowerment which are economic, socio-cultural, familial/interpersonal, legal, political, and psychological as proposed by Malhotra et al. (2002) for the indicator. The result of this study revealed that lyrics on the five selected Beyoncé’s song lyrics represent female empowerment that mostly about in economic and socio-cultural dimensions.;-- Pemberdayaan adalah sebuah istilah yang dapat digunakan oleh sekelompok orang, seperti manula dan perempuan. Bagi perempuan, pemberdayaan membantu mereka untuk mengambil lebih banyak kendali dalam hidup mereka. Isu ini dapat dinyatakan dalam berbagai cara, seperti film atau lagu. Beyoncé dianggap sebagai salah satu penyanyi yang sering mengungkapkan hal ini dalam lagu-lagunya. Maka dari itu, penelitian deskriptif kualitatif ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui dan menyelidiki isu pemberdayaan wanita dalam beberapa lirik lagu Beyoncé yang dipilih, diantaranya Grown Woman, If I Were a Boy, Ring Off, Run the World (Girls), dan ***Flawless dengan menggunakan orders of signification yang dikemukakan oleh Barthes (1957, dalam Chandler, 1994) melalui enam dimensi pemberdayaan wanita yaitu economic, socio-cultural, familial/interpersonal, legal, political, dan psychological yang dikemukakan oleh Malhotra et al. (2002) sebagai indikator. Hasil penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa lima lirik lagu Beyoncé yang dipilih menunjukkan pemberdayaan wanita paling banyak muncul dalam dimensi economic dan socio-cultural.
