Abstract

This study aims to see how the intellectually diffabled is constructed in Forrest Gump novel written by Winston Groom in 1986. To discover the construction of the intellectually diffabled character in the Forrest Gump, focalization’s aspect of Narratology developed by Genette (1972) and Fludernik (2009) and the theory of characterization from Minderop (2005) were employed as tools to analyze the novel. After the data were collected, the data were analyzed by using focalization and characterization and interpreted with support from the secondary sources defining intellectually diffabled character and other relevant studies. The findings of this study show that there are negative perception and positive perception in this novel. However, the positive perception outweighs the negative perception. As a result, Forrest is seen as a man who has many talents. In addition, it can be concluded that although Forrest’s construction still shares most assumption of intellectually diffabled people, Forrest can challenge it all by the positive things he does and thinks.----------Studi ini bertujuan untuk melihat bagaimana karakter yang memiliki keterbelakangan mental dikonstruksi dalam novel Forrest Gump yang ditulis oleh Winston Groom tahun 1986.
